The First Question

Vikramaditya — Chapter 1

Every night, King Vikramaditya walks to the ancient tree at the edge of his kingdom. Every night, the Vetala waits.

The corpse hangs upside-down, eyes open, smiling. It has a story to tell. It always has a story.

Vetala

"Ah, the King returns. Tell me, Vikrama — are you brave, or merely stubborn?"

Vikramaditya

"Does it matter? I am here."

The Vetala begins its tale: A merchant's son loved two women — one who saved his life, and one who saved his soul. On the day he was forced to choose, he chose neither. He walked into the sea.

Vetala

"Tell me, King — who bears the greater grief? The woman who lost him to the ocean, or the woman who lost him to his own cowardice?"

Silence in the cremation ground. Even the jackals stop to listen. The King thinks. The Vetala grins.

Vikramaditya

"Neither. The greatest grief belongs to the man himself — for he chose the only answer that gave no one peace."
